Who We Are

Indian artisans are quintessential to the country’s rich heritage and culture. But as India moved towards Industrialization, the artisans found themselves struggling to keep their legacy alive. Over the past 30 years, their numbers have decreased by 30%, and the ones who are still taking their heritage forward operate in an informal work setting with lesser pay and recognition.

Indie Silks is a humble effort of Mr. Sundar Mada and Mr. Subrahmayam Mada to change this fact and revive the slowly-dying heritage of Indian artisans.

Where it All Began

The story of Indie Silks began in the small town of Pedana located at the coastal lines of Andhra Pradesh. Home to a huge community of artisans, Pedana is renowned for its impressive hand-block printed Kalamkari and handwoven sarees. Sundar and Subrahmayam’s parents were also weavers. Both of them would help their parents in weaving elegant sarees.

Years later, Sundar followed his interest and entered the retail industry. He worked for more than 17 years with top companies such as Jubilant Retail (later acquired by Aditya Birla Retail), Reliance Retail, and Utsav Fashion. Throughout his job, Sundar travelled across India to analyze the local markets. He also met weaving clusters to learn more about their art and the troubles they faced. There was one thing in common, the same thing his parents in Pedana also faced – the struggle for right wages and difficulties in marketing.

In 2021, Sundar established Indie Silks along with his brother Subrahmayam to bridge the gap between local artists and global buyers. Now, the brand offers a wide range of handmade products ranging from apparels to jewelries under one roof. All these products are sourced from local artisans to give only the authentic and the best art to the customers.

Our Vision

India’s textile industry is no less than a cultural heritage whose history can be traced back to the Neolithic age. But with modern machines replacing the magic of handwoven pieces, Indian artisans are slowly losing their livelihood.

Indie Silks’ vision is to reverse this change and bring the forgotten artists back to the center stage. We connect with the local artisans and weavers and help them in saving dying crafts, community, and heritage. But our vision doesn’t end there. We also wish to empower them not just by bringing & uplifting them financially but also socially by setting global standards for their timeless art.
